Life more risky for men than women?
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:38:09 pm »
The following graph is taken straight from a Biology A level text book. (Apologies for the quality of this picture).

It would seem that from the above graph, the mortality rate of males is higher than that of females.

I am not asking you to deny this or even agree with this, I am asking you to help think up some explanations.

Any reasons, as long as they can be backed up, are up for debate, be they spiritual, social or biological.

Thats a big yes. men work harder, longer, and face more hazard than women. Men are also more reckless and violent than women.

Very true. Men also tend to speed in cars, or drink and drive more then women, all though its pretty close.

That may be a very good explination though it dosn't fit what is shown.

May I point out that the most noticable difference between male and female deaths is when they are babies.

Your graph reading skillz aren't very good. The most noticeable differences are in the last 4 columns, where the male statistic is almost double what the female statistic is.

Just cause the white space is bigger doesn't mean it's a higher percentage.  B)

By most noticable I ment the most obvious at first glance rather than the greatest difference.

Though I see how the term can be easily confused, sorry.
