This could also mean that google wants to have a hold on opera too...for when they go global.

Little people noticed 2 years ago when I posted about google wanting Operating System developers on their "open jobs" page.

Maybe now Microsoft has some real competition.

Eh, the Operating Systems developer positions were almost certainly for people working on Google's internal operating system.  They have a highly tweaked version of Linux running on thier servers.  If they were seriously considering a consumer OS release, they would more than likely just buy off a Linux dev company.

Slightly off topic question:

If you were to buy out all of the cheese making factories in the world, but not too many in the USA, would you get charged with a monopoly? Or do monopoly charges only count for US-only based companies?

Well, the U.S. Judicial system only has jurisdiction in the United States, so it would only work if the company had a monopoly on the American market.
